Welcome the the monthly client spotlight at Beach Business Center! December we are showcasing Jill Brousard, attorney at law, and had a great interview with her on what it’s like to be an estate planning lawyer. Enjoy!
Q: First of all, who are you and what do you do?
A: Jill Brousard and I am a probate and trust attorney. That means that I do estate plans like trust and wills and also go to court when a person dies and get a will probated. I also deal with seniors when they have capacity issues.
Q: When you were a kid, that’s what you wanted to be, huh?
A: No, when I was a kid I wanted to be a doctor, but I faint at the site of blood.
Q: What is the name of your company?
A: The Law Offices of Hardee & Brousard
Q: What does an estate planning lawyer do, exactly?
A: I help people get through the death of a family member and I help prepare people for there passing.
Q: Who is your ideal client and why?
A: My ideal client is willing to listen, consider the options I present to them, and willing to make a choice. As far as a person – A family member who has passed away, has had diseases like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s and needs help with those issues.
Q: What kind of “options” are you referring to?
A: We talk about who would be in charge if they were incapacitated or pass away. Medical decisions they would want at that time, life options and things of that nature.
Q: Paint me a picture of what a day in your shoes typically goes like…
A: I have two types of days. Some days I start in court and then my day is usually me meeting with clients, drafting documents, answering phone calls, responding to emails, coffee and tea time, then I go home to my husband.
Q: Do you ever take work home with you, emotionally speaking? I’m usually pretty good at leaving at the office. Every now and again I will wake up in the middle of the night thinking about someone’s case and will work on it for a few hours.
Q: What do you love about your industry/niche?
A: I love meeting families, I love helping people out, and I like to attempt to bring common sense to a very stressful and emotional situation
Q: How do you not get emotionally involved with your clients?
A: I do, and sometimes it helps. It makes me fight a little harder for them. Other times if it’s getting in the way then I talk to colleagues and they help me temper my emotions.
Q: Any rewards, certifications, etc that you would like to brag about?
A: I am a member of the Executive Committee of the LA County Bar Trust & Estate Section. I’m a probate volunteer panel attorney which is a group of attorney’s who are appointed in LA County Probate matters to represent persons who are not capable of making there own decisions or who have been accused of being unable to make there own decisions.
Q: Have you always been located in Long Beach? if no…extrapolate why the move…
A: No, I moved to Long Beach about 3 years ago. My office was in Whittier and I serve clients in Whittier as well as in Long Beach. Long Beach has become my main office however.
Q: If you could give someone relatively new to your industry/niche any advice or tips, what would that be?
A: Research what you are looking at, talk to colleagues, and share your experience with others and you will learn 10 fold more.
